What Should I Tip My Movers?

You know you’re supposed to tip hairstylists, rideshare drivers and servers: But what about movers? It’s something you’re thinking about now that you’re relocating to Ohio.

Do you tip commercial movers? And if so, what is a customary gratuity for movers? Read on for answers!

Unlike restaurant or salon staff, movers don’t expect tips. But they appreciate receiving a reward for excellent service. Defining an industry standard is tricky, so let’s consider a list of factors to weigh when deciding whether to tip movers.

Recognizing good work

As your movers finish the job, think about how the day went. Did they arrive on time? Did they listen, ask questions, provide sound advice and set you at ease? Did your treasures end up where you wanted them? Did the crew go above and beyond?

If you answered yes to these questions, you should tip. As for the amount, well, that depends on your level of satisfaction with the service provided. More on that in a moment.

A tough move?

One factor to consider when deciding how much to tip your movers is the difficulty of the job. Did the crew have to negotiate stairs, cramped hallways or other challenges? If they safely transported a piano, artwork or other fragile items, you should tip to show your gratitude.

Also consider the weight of items moved, and how many pieces and boxes the crew carried. Did your move to Dayton involve large furniture pieces? Did the move take a long time? Moving heavy appliances on a hot summer day might warrant a larger tip. If you made lots of specific requests, and saw them carried out perfectly, a healthy tip is in order.

If you tip

The going rate for a tip for a local move is 5% of the total bill, if the customer is pleased. For multi-day, cross-country moves, tips can range from $40 to $200 per person. Of course, how much you tip is up to you and your level of satisfaction.

How should you spread the wealth? Determine whether you’d like to hand the tip to the foreman, or to each crew member individually. (Remember, the crew moving you out may not be the same one moving you in: Be sure to tip movers when you have the chance.) If a few movers worked particularly hard, feel free to give them a slightly larger tip. Otherwise, split the reward equally among the crew.

One last suggestion: You can also show your appreciation by offering the crew cold drinks, especially on hot days.
