Walking into a store to buy a light bulb these days is confusing.

There is an entire aisle dedicated to lighting up your home.

There are all kinds of LED lights that use 75% less energy than the standard incandescent bulb.

There are lights for your garage. Ones that claim to last 22,000 hours and ones that will make your hallway bright.

There are so many options it’s hard to even find what you would consider a standard bulb.

When the new technology started to hit the market in the early 2000s, the LED bulb was expensive and often had a florescent look to it. Now, there is soft light and you can’t even tell it’s not an incandescent light.

So you have decided to make a big move in your life and hired the best Dayton mover, and avoided being a victim of a moving scam.

You’re new home is something you have waited for. Now it’s time to start things off right.

But is switching to LED lights what you should do?

Here is a guide to helping you make that decision.

When you are in the store you will notice all kinds of LED light bulbs.

We all know what 60-watt light bulb is. But with LED, the standard is a bit different. The term Lumens is used to measure the brightness of an LED bulb. Since LEDs use so much less energy, they don’t go by the same measure.

For example, a 100-watt bulb would be about 1,600 lumens. A 60-watt bulb would be about 800 lumens.

To make this simple when you buy an LED is to look at the terms brightness and appearance.

Bulbs will give off different light that will have a warm or cool look.

If all this is too confusing, most packages will still have the watt equivalent listed on the front of the package.

Just remember, the higher the number, the brighter the light bulb will make your room. So if you want that warm glow, go for the middle range power on the bulb. Think of it as a 60-watt light bulb. Because when you are getting ready for the day, you will look your best with a 60-watt bulb.

While you are in the store you will see 12V LED lights for home use.

So, what are these?

Well, they are perfect for many things in your home. Often you will see light strips that are great for cabinet lighting. This also is a great way light up the outside of your home.

While 12-volt lights are perfect when doing light strips in your home, it’s not something you would light your entire house with.

These lights require an adapter to run in your home.

But they can be perfect for accent lighting.

If you have an office in your new home, or are running a business, you should consider commercial LED office lighting.

So, what’s the difference?

Commercial lighting is what you often will see in many businesses. The lights are about 4 feet wide and are often attached to the ceiling.

Since you want to create a work environment, the LED lights used here are often brighter, giving you plenty of light to do your job.

Prices for most LED office lighting range from $150 and up.

Look at the size of your space you are trying to light up for an office. You don’t want to make the room too bright.

The average LED for an office space should be around 800 lumens.

If you have ever touched an LED light bulb you will notice the lack of heat from it. There is little energy loss from this.

While the cost up front for an LED bulb is more, the savings come from how long the product will last.

Many standard bulbs will last 2,000 hours. LED bulbs can last 10 times that.

Big box stores selling LED lights estimate an average savings for about $83 per bulb over its life.

Many lights that are fluorescent use mercury as part of its construction. And because of this they need special handling when the bulb is done being used. With LED lights this is not a concern.

Adding new LED lights to your home or office is a good move. The cost savings on your energy bill will make you smile.
